Song of Songs Intro

Should we read this book as an allegory?

  1. We need a good reason to read any portion of scripture as allegory
  2. The history:
    • The primary way both the Jewish and Christian scholars have interpreted it as allegory
  3. This is the Song of Songs
    • solomon wrote 1005 songs this is the only one he named thus: the song from which all songs spring
      • the song to end all songs
      • the “meta” song
      • not just a tale about a guy and a girl
  4. To sexy!

Why we NEED the Song of Solomon:

  1. God is a passionate emotional God - we need to feel it - WHO HE IS
    • and often romantic or poetic language is a better doorway into experience of God’s emotions
    • he enjoys us! - it is so hard to believe this! - we must ENCOUNTER it
  2. The first Commandment - WHO HE WE ARE
    • We are the people of the First Commandment - Matt 22:37 37And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38This is the great and first commandment.
      • To love God is the highest calling the thing God desires of us most is our love for Him
    • If we want to love God we must have revelation knowledge of His love for us - Beholding and becoming
      • 1 John 4:19 - we love because he first loved us
      • Ephesians 3:17 - 20 - that you would KNOW the love of God in all its dimensions -  17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
      • 1 John 3:2 - we will be like him for we will see him as he is
      • 2 Cor 3:18 - 18And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord,e are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Make this YOUR song:

  1. Take this song to the secret place!  Let it become the love language between you and Jesus!
    • this is true of the whole Bible
    • When you are given something to believe - a truth about God or yourself
      • thank you for this
      • help me to know it in fullness - show me more
      • I want to experience this beyond head knowledge
    • When you are commanded to do something - told to obey
      • forgive me
      • help me obey it
      • help me understand it
    • Eph 3:17 - KNOW - epignosis - experiential knowledge

We are going to walk through the journey the Bride goes on as she moves in toward Him.

I - The Cry for knowledge and her early decision to belong to him and be His completely forever (SONG 1:1-4)

1The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s. - we already went there

2"May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine.

  1. This is a prayer - LET HIM - please I want him to kiss me!  She is asking somebody.
  2. the kisses of his mouth - the kisses of His word
    • Jewish scribes said the kisses of the Torah
    • ENCOUNTER with His Word upon our heart - walk in the revelation of God’s heart
    • the spirit of wisdom and revelation Eph 1:17
    • Isaiah 62 - He will not be silent he will not be quiet
    • This is the request the begins the journey of the rest of this book - she returns to this request over and over it is the chief cry of her heart and it should be the chief cry of ours!!!!
      • Intimacy
      • the request to know Him more - IS the request to love Him more - IS the request to be more like Him
    • My journal - vs 2 I exult again in the opening cry of this song.  How this cry must have captured Solomon’s heart to give it the preeminence he has.  The cry for intimate experiential knowledge of the love of the king.  This is the cry that begins the journey of the bride from orphan farm girl to exalted queen beloved of the king.  So I take up the cry today.  “Father let Jesus come and kiss me with the kisses of His mouth!!  Let the fire of love be kindled again in my cold heart by the Ever Living Word!  Let me hear Isaiah 62 again that you will NOT be quiet nor even keep silent when you are speaking over me!”
  3. Your love is better than wine
    • Love feels good! - intoxicating - we lose ourselves - enjoying God is righteousness -
    • being satisfied in God is the opposite of Sin - Jer 2:12-13

"For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, The fountain of living waters, To hewfor themselves cisterns, Broken cisterns That can hold no water.

    • Psalm 36:8 - the river of your pleasure
    • Psalm 16:11 - eternal pleasures at your right hand
    • Intimacy:
      • sex is a picture of our intimacy with God and it IS really good - FOR A REASON - our intimacy with God is far above and beyond
      • takes time to develop
      • requires total vulnerability and trust
      • is the fountain of righteousness and joy in God
      • Matt 6:6 - go into your room and CLOSE THE DOOR
      • book secrets of the secret place - Bob Sorge
    • Journal - Yes I see that your love is better than all the other things I would use to gladden my heart.  Yes I believe that your love is the one thing that will satisfy the groaning of my inward man.  Yes I understand that I was formed to be loved by the king of kings.  Yes I understand that this is my calling and my inheritance.  Father do this in me for real again.  I want the kisses because I know your love is better.  I choose your love by faith in how much better it really is.

3"Your oils have a pleasing fragrance, Your name is [like] purified oil; Therefore the maidens love you.

  1. oils have a pleasing fragrance
    • Journal - Your anointing oils are fragrant -Psalm 45:8 -your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia - Your authority is sweet to me.  Your priestly office over me is so wonderful and obvious.  You are a good high priest for me.  You minister to me and take care of me.  You have made peace between me and God.  You are the Messiah - the anointed one. Isaiah 61 - the one who brings good news to this poor man.  The one who binds up my broken heart. My shattered dreams, my foolish losses, my bruised and battered psyche; this bruised reed you did not break, this flickering flame you did not snuff out!  You have proclaimed liberty to this captive and a release from all my bondage!  You proclaim over me the end of my waiting, my languishing and the reality that my cries have been heard and my rescuer is come.  You proclaim over me the year of the favor of the Lord!!!!   My mourning over the dead promises over my life is at an end!!!
  2. Your name is purified oil
    • Your name is like perfume poured out! - The glory of who you are is pleasing to me. Psalm 27:4 You are the one thing I wish to behold and to experience.  That I might dwell in the house of the Lord for all the days of my life.  To gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire at His temple.  Father set me again to gazing.  Set me again to beholding and becoming.  It is your glory oh Lord that I desire to behold.  To really know you as you are.  You are so satisfying.  The more I learn of you the more I want to learn!  I deeply love your nature.  You are Daddy God.  You are a jealous groom.  You are a Righteous Judge.  You are a Sovereign King!  You are all of this and more and I want to know all that you are!  I want to know deeply each of these realities and love them deeply.
  3. therefore virgins love you. - All of Heaven adores you.  All of earth desires you.  All that I am was made for you.  You ARE all together lovely!  All that is will bow before your glory and I choose to do so now.  Whenever I get a glimpse of you I am overwhelmed.  When I get a view of all that you are and all that you do I am undone with longing.  Show me again.  Undo me again.  Unhinge me again.  Awaken me again to my desperate desire for all of your glory.  Let desperation stir faith in the depths of me.

4"Draw me after you [and] let us run [together]! The king has brought me into his chambers." "We will rejoice in you and be glad; We will extol your love more than wine. Rightly do they love you."

  1. Draw me after you
  2. Journal 4 Draw me after you; let us run. - YES draw me after you I am incapable of coming in my own strength.  Woo me!  pull me!  draw me!!!! I want to move toward you.  So move toward me.The king has brought me into his chambers. - I love this.  It does NOT say “I entered into the chambers of the king - it says “The king has brought me in”  It shows my weakness beside His desire and strength.  You have brought me in.  Nothing I could do could have done it.  Nothing I could have tried could have done it.  YOU HAVE BROUGHT ME IN.  Bring me in again!  I want to be there even now King of kings.  Take me in now!  Let Him Kiss ME!!!  YOU have done this!!! YOU YOU YOU!!!! You chose to!  You delight in doing this!  YOU make me yours.  Thank you - the king has brought me into his chambers..... how can this be?  but here I am.  Oh your love for me is great.  I need nothing moreWe will exult and rejoice in you; we will extol your love more than wine; Who is this voice?  The angels?  The Holy Spirit?  Other believers?  The reality is it may be all of the above!  The angels are spirits sent to serve the beloved of God, the Holy Spirit is the one who is the mark of this union; the one who will point only to Jesus and give us all that is his.  Other believers are meant to encourage each other in our running after Christ.  It is beautiful.  Truly all of creation is the benefactor of the union of Jesus and His bride.  All of creation groans and waits for the revelation of the sons of God.  We are the first fruits of the recreation of all that is! rightly do they love youOh rightly do they love you Jesus!  Rightly does all of creation worship you Jesus!  You are SO worthy!  So beautiful!  rightly rightly rightly do we all love you!  Desire of the nations!

Ephesians 6 Last Half - The Armor of God

  • This is a fight - a real fight with real consequences -
    • a real race with a real prize - a real war with a real enemy
  • Know your enemy - you are not fighting against the other racers!!! - it is easy when we enter into the race to think of the other racers as the enemy - Paul says NOPE -
    • we have a real enemy but it is not the other racers it is Satan and His demons - it is the atmosphere in which we race - the course and the weather, and our own weakness.  You are fighting against them no one else!
    • Stop blaming the other racers for you difficulty!!
  • Know your helpThe apostle Paul begins to describe the strength of the Lord by using the metaphor or the armor of God - He is calling us to understand the help we’ve been given!  More than enough help to win the race
    • Loins girded with truth - I don’t want to say what it is…. certain supportive garments….. people wear to make it easier to be vigorously active….. you can fill in the blank….
      • The point is! - Jesus said you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.
      • The truth frees us to run / move without difficulty
        • the truth about God
        • the truth about ourselves
        • the truth about those around us
    • Breastplate of righteousness - the heart monitor of righteousness
      • This isn’t our righteousness he’s talking about - this isn’t the apostle Paul saying “ya’ll better be good out there!"
      • We PUT ON the righteousness of Christ Jesus
      • I call it the heart monitor because it checks our pulse for us - when we daily put on the righteousness of Jesus we are doing a heart check with the Lord - reconnecting with the one who is our righteousness and aligning our hearts with him again.  When we are in touch with His righteousness and our hearts go out of sink with His we will know it.
    • The preparation of the Gospel of Peace on your feet
      • The running shoes of peace
      • a firm foundation - because of the Gospel we have peace with God - the wrath of God is not hanging over our heads - fear
    • the shield of faith - the sunblock of faith
      • protects from the fiery darts of the enemy - the sun!  As you know my family and I are gingers we fight a daily battle with the sun.
      • in running you are exposed to the rays of the sun and you can get burned!  - this world we live in is a constant attack on the belief system we hold.  It tells us every day that God’s ways are foolish, that God doesn’t exist or is irrelevant,  that we cannot trust Him
      • A daily application of the sunblock of faith restores our resistance
    • the helmet of salvation - the sweat band of righteousness
      • the emblem - the helmets served to protect the head but also bore symbols of their gods emblems of the strength a lion an eagle etc.  they were telling themselves covering their minds with the knowledge of who was helping them fight the battle - when I was a kid just putting on a nike emblem psyched me out.. I can do this!
      • protect the eyes - a sweat band keeps sweat and hair OUT of your eyes - you cannot see to run if you have an eye problem - being reminded of the hope of our salvation gives us eyes to see the path we are really on.
      • Jesus said if our eyes were dark our whole being would be dark we have to set our eyes and our minds on things above. Col 3:1-31 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
    • the sword of the spirit - the Word of God
      • Praying in the Spirit with all supplication  - get that sword OUT use it in prayer and clean house!!

18With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, 19and [pray] on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in [proclaiming] it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

21But that you also may know about my circumstances, how I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, will make everything known to you. 22I have sent him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know about us, and that he may comfort your hearts.

23Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord JesusChrist. 24Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptible [love].

Ephesians 6 First Half

1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

  • We continue to talk about “submit to one another in the fear of Christ” - this is the next category of that
  • children - someone who is under the care of their parents - someone who is not responsible for themselves legally
  • obey - it does not say obey - it says listen to - that is not LESS than Obey it is MORE than Obey
    • when you don’t want to
    • when you have heard it a million times before
    • ACTUALLY listen don’t just imagine you already know what they are going to say
    • CONSIDER - THINK - challenge yourself - am I right about this?
    • God and parents are not interested in robotic obedience - they are interested in loving, respectful, thoughtful obedience to the HEART of what they said not just to their instructions!
  • "in the Lord” -
    • Not to the point of disobeying God
    • It is a part of your obedience to God - if you are dishonoring your parents you are dishonoring God
  • Family is a reflection of our relationship with God:
    • God gave us Fathers, AND Mothers to teach us about Him
      • about how he feels about us
      • about how we should feel about Him
      • about how and WHY we should do what He says
        • obeying God is NOT about a dictator holding authority over our heads saying “do this or else"
        • God is a king and he is Sovereign - and that is the best news anyone could ever get.
          • He is a dictator - but not a tyrant
          • He is love - He is FOR US
          • He has all resource - and NEVER STOPS GIVING
          • He KNOWS EVERYTHING
        • IT is ALL about HIM and that is so GREAT!
      • When our parents love us - really love us - it is such good news that they are in charge of our welfare

Prophetic Class - Authority from Intimacy

Rev 19:10

10Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

“I am Gabriel who stands in the presence of God"

Testimony - personal experience

John 15:15 - I no longer call you servants

Jesus is looking for partnership - friendship - that is the fountainhead of prophecy

Jesus in the Garden - will you not tarry with me?

Abraham - Gen 18 - God stops and talks to Abraham

The Judge is emotional about what he does

Ezekiel 22:30 - I looked for an intercessor!

Ephesians 5:21-33

21and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.

  • hold your brothers and sisters to be of higher rank than you in the fear (phobos - where we get our word phobia) of Christ
    • it literally means to “be under in rank"
      • live life in service to your family in Christ
      • This is again about HONOR - showing deference and respect
      • to ONE ANOTHER - I show you respect and deference you show ME respect and deference
      • Phil 2:3 - Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;
    • should we fear Christ? - yes - but not as in shrinking from his influence
      • by having a right understanding of his power, authority, and majesty - Psalm 2 rejoice with trembling
      • a sense of awe - the crocodile in the zoo, looking down from the height of a cliff

Marriage Like Christ and the Church

22Wives, [be subject] to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

  • there it is ladies - you heard it here! - this is one of the places where context means EVERYTHING
  • it does not say “wives be subject to your husbands”  it says “wives to your husbands” connecting it emphatically to the verse before it - He gave a general command "be subject to ONE ANOTHER in the FEAR of Christ” now he is breaking out the categories and setting a description for one kind of submission - that of a wife to her husband
    • "recognize someone has legitimate authority over you. It means you recognize that there is an order of authority, and that you are part of a unit, a team. You as an individual are not more important that the working of the unit or the team.” Guzik
    • Submission does not mean inferiority. As well, submission does not mean silence. Submission means "sub-mission." There is a mission for the Christian marriage, and that mission is obeying and glorifying God. The wife says, "I'm going to put myself under that mission. That mission is more important than my individual desires. I'm not putting myself below my husband, I'm putting myself below the mission God has for our marriage, for my life."
  • to YOUR OWN HUSBANDS - not to every other man!  This does not place all men above all women - it says in marriage there are two different ROLES to be filled

23For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christalso is the head of the church, He Himself [being] the Savior of the body.

24But as the church is subject to Christ,so also the wives [ought to be] to their husbands in everything.

  • wife's submission to her husband is part of her Christian life and obedience.
  • When a wife doesn't obey this word to submit to your own husband, as to the Lord, she isn't only falling short as a wife. She is falling short as a follower of Jesus Christ.
  • This is completely out of the realm of the wife's nature or personality.
  • This has nothing to do with a husband's intelligence, giftedness, or capability. It has to do with honoring the Lord Jesus Christ
  • This has nothing to do with whether or not the husband is right on a particular issue. It has to do with Jesus being right.
  • This means that a woman should take great care in how she chooses her husband. Instead of looking for an attractive man, instead of looking for a wealthy man, instead of looking for a romantic man, a woman should first look for a man she can respect. G. Campbell Morgan recalls the story of the older Christian woman who had never married, and she explained, "I never met a man who could master me." She had the right idea.
  • If you want to please Jesus, if you want to honor Him, then submit to your own husband as to the Lord.
  • "There can be no more compelling motive for any action than this; and every Christian wife who is concerned above everything else to please the Lord Jesus Christ, will find no difficulty in this paragraph; indeed it will be her greatest delight to do what the Apostle tells us here." (Lloyd-Jones)

25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,

26so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. 28Sohusbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; 29for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also [does] the church,30because we are members of His body. 31FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND SHALL BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH. 32This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. 33Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to lovehis own wife even as himself, and the wife must [see to it] that she respects her husband.

  • There are two pieces of this discourse that desperately need to be unpacked
    • The relationship of a man to his wife:
      • This is the purpose and power of a wife’s submission
        • NOURISH - protect, provide, promote - seeing to practical need
          • to give you a safe place full of acceptance and joy to try new things and grow and become more like Jesus
          • to bring correction when it is necessary - to wash you with the water of the word - not his own opinion!
          • to fight for you against your enemies both physically and emotionally
          • to never EVER make you feel attacked by himself - he is your protector
        • CHERISH - to treat you like the treasure you are! - seeing to emotional need
          • it is his duty and his delight to release you to be all God has dreamed you can be!
          • to get you out of your own way and connect you to purpose
          • to see in you what YOU cannot see in you and encourage you to step into who you really are!
      • Remember Mark 10 - this is what Kingdom authority looks like from God the Father on down!
      • There is something in the heart of a man that deeply desires to be your hero - to go all out for you
        • Let him save you ladies - let him serve you.
        • if you are too strong to let him serve you - you are denying him his ability to be who God created him to be.
    • The relationship of Christ to His church:
      • gave Himself up for us - three humiliations of Christ - the incarnation, the cross, the church
      • sanctifying her - making her HOLY - Jesus makes us holy - he does not condemn
      • that he might present her to HIMSELF - we are FOR HIM!  We are being made beautiful because we are for HIM
      • made glorious - no spot, no wrinkle, holy and blameless
      • nourish - feed and clothe - take care of all our needs
      • cherish - make us feel adored
  • This right here is why we cannot be OK with same sex relationships being called “marriage”. - Marriage is a material world reflection of something deeply mystical and spiritual - it is a "great mystery" as Paul relates.
    • Marriage and family are shadows of a much larger much more powerful and important eternal reality
    • Marriage is temporary - only until death or resurrection

Q and A and Ephesians 5:1-10ish

1Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children;

  • Have you ever seen a little kid? trying to act just like his dad? - does he ever succeed in being more than an echo?

2and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gaveHimself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

  • This is the way we imitate God - We WALK in LOVE
  • just as Christ - John 13:34 love each other just as I have loved you
    • Jesus example of love is the "how to" video of the Christian life - the model we are sculpted after
  • and gave himself up for us
    • literally betrayed himself
    • worked against his own self interest but for ours
  • an offering and a sacrifice as a fragrant aroma
    • Jesus sacrifice was for our good and pleasing to His father

3But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; 4and [there must be no] filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks 5For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

  • immorality - porneia this is where we get our word “pornography” it means literally “fornication” - ANY sexuality outside of marriage
  • impurity - uncleanness, this is a reference to homosexuality
  • greed - covetousness living ones life in pursuit of things
  • MUST NOT even be named among you
    • Why are these three linked to one another here? - they are ALL a form of idolatry (see the vs 5)
    • In the end you get what you spend your life chasing
  • filthiness, silly talk, coarse jesting - the kind of joking and discussion that are out of place in a holy setting
    • this goes beyond just lewd jokes or bad words
    • this includes acidic sarcasm and biting comments
  • but rather thankfulness
    • We should be a people marked not by cynicism and sarcasm but by gratitude
    • a people who encourage one another and bring wholeness and joy

Ephesians 4:12-32

    • equip the saints for the work of service
      • this speaks of setting things in order, "setting a bone or mending a net" - restoration to purpose - setting the army in order
        • we are not the spiritual quartermasters - we don’t hand out the equipment - we train, we organize, we recognize, we affirm, we set the pieces we are given on the board
    • to the building up of the Body - setting in order according to the plans God laid out - like a builder working from blueprints
      • until the attaining: These are the blueprints
        • of unity - unless the pieces are in the correct places the puzzle will not stay together
        • the knowledge of the Son - unless the pieces are in the correct place we cannot see the picture!
        • maturity - the full flower of our gifting and potential
        • the fullness of Christ - Jesus fully present on the earth through His bride
          • we’ve got our work cut out for us…. yikes!
  • Resulting in:
    • no longer children tossed about by every religious idea
    • speaking the truth in love
    • grow up into all aspects, dimensions, facets… of Jesus
    • Every piece where it belongs doing what it is supposed to be doing
    • each part giving to the others not serving ourselves but each other

The Christian’s Walk

17So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind,

  • Not walking as the world walks when it comes to the mind
    • futility - vanity and emptiness
    • that the mind be set on things that are eternal, worth while, seeking things with significance and impact

18being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;

  • having a darkened mind -  fumbling around in the dark  UNABLE to see the light
  • life of God is connected to light and knowledge
    • John 1 - in him was life and that life was the light of men
  • They are excluded from the life of God - because of the ignorance
    • ignorance CAUSED by hardness of heart
    • they are purposefully ignorant

19and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.

  • Having become callous - having lost sensitivity or feeling.  They have gone numb
  • they are incapable of feeling guilt or shame…..or joy!
    • so they have given themselves over to sensuality just to feel something!
    • like an addict with increasing amounts of drug

20But you did not learn Christ in this way,

  • From pursuing sensuality
  • From being callous and numb

21if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit,

  • We came to Christ in repentance
    • Turning from one way and accepting another
    • Changing the way we think and feel about the world and ourselves
  • We came to Christ bowing to His way acknowledging His truth
  • We came to Christ responding the the Spirit of God not to our flesh

23and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

  •

24and put on the new self, which in [the likeness of] God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

25Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE [of you] WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one another. 26BE ANGRY, AND [yet] DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your anger,27and do not give the devil an opportunity. 28He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have [something] to share with one who hasneed. 29Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such [a word] as is good for edification according to the need [of the moment], so that it will give grace to those who hear. 30Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

Ephesians 4:11-12

11And He gave some [as] apostles, and some [as] prophets, and some [as] evangelists, and some [as] pastors and teachers, 12for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;

13until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.14As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; 15but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all [aspects] into Him who is the head, [even] Christ, 16from whom the whole body, being fittedand held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

  • Gifts
    • Lots of ways to classify the gifts but I think God purposefully frustrated us in this
      • several lists of gifts and none of them lend themselves to a single system of classification
      • God loves to step into our logical world and say  - “nope I get to do what I want"
    • These 5 gifts however have been given a specific purpose in this text - we will get to the purpose in a minute
    • Recognizing and receiving all God wants to give in these gifts is crucial - Matt 10:41 - honor a prophet as a prophet receive a prophet’s reward
  • 5-fold “office or ministry” gifts - “for establishment of the church and bringing it to maturity” Horton
    • Car accident picture - page 51 culture of Honor
    • Danny Silk says that the order comes from 1 Cor 12:28 and authority flows out that way.  Hmmm maybe lol.
    • Mike Breen Believes that each person in the church has one of these functions - I don’t have a problem with that idea, but there are those especially called to giving their whole lives to this mission and we need to remember that.
    • Apostles
      • definition of the greek word: a messenger, envoy, delegate, one commissioned by another to represent him in some way especially a man sent out by Jesus Christ Himself to preach the Gospel
      • Original 12 - had a special place - Jesus said they would judge the tribes of Israel - Paul was appointed as an apostle in the same manner but to the Gentiles
      • Apostle - I love the way people squirm about this one
        • Church builder - 1 Cor 3:10 Paul calls himself “master builder"
          • “The Apostle will make the presence of God, the worship of God, and the agenda of Heaven the top priorities in the environment” Danny Silk Culture of Honor
          • “Apostles are visionary and pioneering, always pushing into new territory. They like to establish new churches, ministries, non-profits, Kingdom-minded businesses or initiatives. They come up with innovative means to do kingdom work.” Mike Breen - building Kingdom Culture
          • They establish the system - they look to Heaven by faith and set up a mirror on the earth
          • call and train the first - "lay down the lines” and then go
          • a leader and trainer of church leadership
          • they are the DNA formers - the culture creators
          • Doctrine establisher
            • the one we go back to and ask is this interpretation a correct application?
            • they hold the line - they are foundational lined up with Jesus
      • Downside - can forget people’s needs because obsessed with the mission, can bulldoze because of how driven they are, NOT a detail oriented person very “big picture” oriented.
    • Prophets
      • they hear the voice of God and speak the words of God
      • Foretelling and Forthtelling
        • Foretelling - telling the future
        • Forth telling - What God is saying TO YOU for RIGHT NOW
      • they apprehend the kingdom and birth it - bring it forth - spiritual midwives
        • “apprehends the promises of the Kingdom for individual destinies and calls them into reality through declaration.” Danny Silk Culture of Honor
      • they give the gift of sight - prophecy is contagious - they carry an anointing that opens the ears of those they encounter
        • 1 Samuel 10 - "is Saul among the prophets?"
        • remember These gifts are for the equipping of the saints!
      • Downside - Can be harsh and too black and white, not very compassionate more than often, can be really impatient, can be prideful, can be condemning rather than inspirational.
    • Teachers
      • the breakers of the bread - they make the Bible clear - they do not decide what is in it!
      • Teachers dive deep to bring treasures out from the word that are not easily found
      • teachers equip the body to understand God through His word and by His Spirit
      • Downside - they have trouble with things they cannot understand.  Have a compulsive need to be right.  Love to argue because they usually win.  Are not usually connected very well with mission.
    • Evangelists
      • reach the lost and train others how to reach the lost - period
      • Downside - can be so focused on winning the lost that they don’t care about the body.  They get angry with the body often for not caring about the lost enough.  Tend not to care very much about someone once they have been converted.
    • Pastors
      • the shepherds
      • they take care of the flock
      • they communicate the comfort of God
      • they bring the correction of God
      • they are the ones walking WITH the sheep CARRYING the weak ones
      • Downside - tend to be so focused on need that they forget mission.  Can be overwhelmed by the amount of need they encounter.  Can be exhausted because they will keep giving until they have nothing left.  Tend to lead, speak, teach, out of need rather than vision.

The Analogy of the Flock:  You have a flock of sheep that need to go to the pastures to graze

    • Apostle says - here is the map to where we are going, if you walk in such and such formation you will be safer, only walk during the day and rest at night - now go
    • Prophet says - LOOK AT THE MAP - and points to the mountain saying "I can see it! Can’t you see it?  It’s right there go there!  NO not THERE - THERE."
    • Teacher says - here is how to avoid the rocks and the crevasses, if you eat this kind of plant you will get sick so don’t eat those, when you get there it will look like such and such.
    • Pastor says - "come on I’ll walk with you from here to there and pick you up when you fall"
    • Evangelist says - "come join the flock we’re going someplace good."

Ephesians 4:1-10

1Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,

  • Therefore - in view of the overwhelming revelation of the Love of God toward us
  • implore you - this is a form of the same word as the Holy Spirit - come along side and encourage you
  • walk in a manner worthy - walk worthily - having worth that matches the actual value
  • the calling - this is NOT ministerial calling here it is the calling of Christ to come out of darkness into light

2with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love,

  • THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE TO WALK WORTHY PAY ATTENTION!!!
  • humility - Philippians 2:3 - esteem others better than yourself
    • Without arrogance, pride, or a spirit of dictation; without a desire to "lord it over God's heritage"; without being elated with the authority of the apostolic office, the variety of the miracles which he was enabled to perform, or the success which attended his labors. What an admirable model for all who are in the ministry; for all who are endowed with talents and learning; for all who meet with remarkable success in their work! The proper effect of such success, and of such talent, will be to produce true humility. The greatest endowments are usually connected with the most simple and childlike humility.
    • It means that we can be happy and content when we are not in control or steering things our way.
  • gentleness - Matt 5:5 blessed are the meek they shall inherit the earth
    • Psalm 25:13 - Jesus was quoting this
    • to bear injury without anger or desire for revenge
    • Meekness- power in reserve - restrained power -
  • patience - long suffering -
  • bearing with one another in love
    • sticking around
    • choosing to be committed to one another no matter what.

3being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

  • to PRESERVE the unity of the Spirit
    • the Spirit gave us unity we don’t create it but we can destroy it!
    • Jesus is the bond of peace

4[There is] one body and oneSpirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling;

  • I love this verse so much!

5one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

  • one baptism does not mean there is no baptism in the Holy Spirit - it just means that when we are baptized into Christ that is the only baptism there is

6one Godand Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

  • Do NOT be fooled - he is the Father of all but that does not mean that those outside of Christ are receiving salvation!

7But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ's gift.

  • BUT to each one of us GRACE was given - free gifts were given
  • according to whatever Jesus decided to give - Jesus is the gift giver.
  • All of the ways we steward Grace are chosen by Christ and given to us to steward

8Therefore it says, "WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES, AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN."

9(Now this [expression], "He ascended," what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens,so that He might fill all things.)

  • another Pauline rabbit trail
  • Psalm 68:18 - "it says"
  • He descended - Jesus resurrection was a triumphal march back from the sacking of Hell! - truly the gates of Hell did NOT prevail! - Satan, sickness, death, Hell, and the grave were in chains behind Him as he came up out of the grave
  • he gave gifts to men - salvation foremost among them but also the many gifts of grace that were won by his heroic action on the cross!!!
  • This harkens back to the passage in the first chapter vs 20-23

Ephesians 3:1-10

1For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles--

  • For WHAT reason? - because God has brought the Gentiles from being “far away” to near
  • Because Jesus has made one man out of two and is connecting the two in order to make a dwelling place for His spirit on the Earth

2if indeed you have heard of the stewardship of God's grace which was given to me for you;

  • He was a steward of God’s grace - the apostle to the Gentiles
    • Romans 1:5 - grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from Faith
    • 1 Peter 4:10 - Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms
    • 1 Cor 4:1 - stewards of the mysteries of God
    • What Grace are you stewarding? - you are the one to whom the grace is given and it only FROM you that it will be given
      • who is receiving a grace from God through you?
      • who should be but isn’t?
    • He was the one given the job of taking Grace to the Gentiles…

3that by revelation there was made known to me the mystery, as I wrote before in brief.

  • Gal 1:11 - 12 - the Gospel Paul Preaches was given to him by Jesus
  • wrote before in brief - either a different letter or he is referring to chapter 2

4By referring to this, when you read you can understandmy insight into the mystery of Christ,

  • The Mystery of Christ - that he will bring the Gentiles to salvation - this is the only mystery being talked about in this passage

5which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men,as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit;

  • God is showing through Jesus and through the church the essence of what his plan was all along

6[to be specific], that the Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in ChristJesus through the gospel,

  • fellow heirs - we receive the promise also
  • fellow members of the body - we are connected to and of one kind with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David etc
  • fellow partakers of the promise - the promise of salvation, resurrection, and relationship with God
  • through the Gospel - ONLY through the good news - we did not earn it

7of which I was made a minister, according to the gift of God's grace which was given to me according to the working of His power.

  • I love that Paul never allows us to think he earned or deserved the grace of apostleship.  He was called and enabled by the working of God’s power.

8To me, the very least of all saints, this grace was given,to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ,

  • the very least of all saints? - Apostle Paul? -
    • it actually says "less than the least of the saints"
    • Paul wants it to be known in every possible way exactly who he is and who he is not.
  • this grace was given - to be called by God to work for him is a gift from God and is not earned
  • the unfathomable riches of Christ -
    • unsearchable
    • inscrutable
    • past finding out
    • immeasurable
    • the Riches of CHRIST - they are so glorious human language is not up to the task of describing them
      • no wonder he calls it a grace - this is my job!

9and to bring to light what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God who created all things;

  • to bring to light - another translation says “to make all men see"
  • what is the administration - what do your versions say?
    • the how, the why, and the what of the Gospel
    • what is the news?
    • how is it good?
    • how do I get connected to this?
  • the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God - this was God’s big idea from the beginning and now he is finally pulling the cover off and yelling surprise!

10so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly[places].

  • "It was not enough to show it by the creation of intelligent beings, the formation of immortal minds on earth, and the various ranks of the angelic world. There were views of the divine character which could be obtained only in connection with the redemption of the world. Hence the universe was created, and man was made upon the earth, not merely to illustrate the divine perfections in the work of creation, but in a still more illustrious manner in the work of redemption. And hence the deep interest which the angelic hosts have ever evinced in the salvation of man.” Barnes
  • "It is as if a great drama is being enacted. History is the theatre, the world is the stage, and the church members in every land are the actors. God himself has written the play, and he directs and produces it. Act by act, scene by scene, the story continues to unfold. But who are the audience? They are the cosmic intelligences, the principalities and powers in the heavenly places." (Stott)
  • "In his immortality, never touched by one drop of our cold river, it is instructive to him beyond all our thought to see his God triumphing over pain and death in some sufferer in the fire of martyrdom, or in the torture of cancer, or in the shipwreck, or just in the silent awe of any form of our departure from the body . . . They see these fallen and mortal beings, this Community of the lost and saved, not only bearing and doing for God here on earth, but spiritually present with Him in the Holy of Holies above." (Moule)

Ephesians 2:11-24

11Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called "Uncircumcision" by the so-called "Circumcision," [which is] performed in the flesh by human hands-- 12[remember] that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

  • we Gentiles were
    • separate from Christ
    • excluded from Israel
    • strangers to the promise
    • no hope
    • no God

13But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

  • but now - oh I love that
  • we were FORMERLY "far off"
    • Peter called it out on the day of Pentecost - Acts 2:39 "for all who are afar off"

14For He Himself is our peace, who made both [groups into] one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall,

  • He is our peace - the one who is our connection our union
  • made the two one - in Himself
  • broke down the barrier
  • All cultures - all peoples - all of mankind joined here at the cross - in Christ
  • racism is abolished here

15by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, [which is] the Lawof commandments [contained] in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man,[thus] establishing peace, 16and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity.

  • No one gets to boast about the law any more
  • Jew and Gentile have been fused into one - Christ
  • “the ground is level at the Cross” - It is the Cross of Christ that makes us the same.  We are just as guilty - and just as loved - we are all just as saved, and NONE Of us can boast

17AND HE CAME AND PREACHED PEACE TO YOU WHO WERE FAR AWAY, AND PEACE TO THOSE WHO WERE NEAR; 18for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.

  • through Him
    • the Spirit - the downpayment of our great inheritance
    • the Father - given back to our Abba who was the architect of it all!

19So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household,

  • NO LONGER STRANGERS -
    • you are not alone!
    • you are not on your own
    • you are not an outcast anymore
    • you are not the little guy, the broken guy, the poor guy any more
  • Citizens with the saints
    • we stand next to Abraham, Elijah, Moses, and David
    • we stand next to Peter, John, James and Paul
    • God’s household - the royalty of the universe
      • welcome at Dad’s table
      • welcome in his fridge etc

20having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himselfbeing the corner [stone],

  • God’s household - built on the apostles and prophets
  • Jesus the Cornerstone
    • holds it all together
    • gives all of it the correct place
    • sets us in relationship to one another
    • keeps us aligned

21in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, 22in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.

  • This is the church - God’s work of salvation throughout the ages
  • His dwelling place
  • Isaiah 60 - the glory will rise upon you
    • Once again - God’s incredible decision to use the human race in all he does
    • He dwells in us
    • He exerts His power and influence in the world through us.

Ephesians 2:1-10

1And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,

  • His power toward us was demonstrated by the resurrection of Jesus Christ
    • he was taken from the depths of hell and death and brought and seated at the Right Hand of God
  • Even as HE was dead so we were dead in sin - even as He was raise so shall we be raised OUT of SIN into life
  • We were spiritually dead - a very real death - a death that only continued and grew as the body died
    • Dead toward God - we did not desire Him - or find Him delightful
    • We do not understand Him
    • This death is described in the next verse:

2in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.

  • You FORMERLY walked - this is not the life of those who have been touched and changed by the power of God.
  • The Course of this world - (Guzik The “life” of death)
    • enslaved to the “prince of the power of the air"
      • Paul didn’t talk much about Satan
      • Prince (ruler or chief) - a person of authority
      • the power of the air
        • not necessarily where the spirit’s dwell
        • the atmosphere - the “air we breathe” so to speak - the invisible influence all around us
      • the spirit that is at work in the “sons of disobedience"
      • his ways and his thought patterns are alive in them
    • Sons of disobedience
      • we were born of sin
      • we carried its image
      • we could not escape it in our own power no matter how hard we tried
    • vs 3 - living in the lust of our flesh
      • indulging the desires of the flesh
        • desires of the flesh
          • desire is not wrong by itself
          • the flesh is not always evil
          • the idea is that these are desire that come ONLY from the flesh and not arising from Faith or from the Holy Spirit at work inside of us
          • fleshly desires without guidance without a guide lead to destruction
          • it is not the job of the flesh to direct us
        • Gal 5:18 - sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21envy,d drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
        • 1 Peter 2:11 - sinful desires wage war against your soul
      • the desires of the mind
        • the mind apart from the influence of the Spirit
    • by nature children of wrath
      • our very nature lead us deeper into destruction
      • our very nature lead us further from God

3Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the fleshand of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

4But God, - Oh this is such a beautiful word

  • We were so lost
  • He did not leave us there

being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,

  • He is RICH in mercy
  • BECAUSE of HIS GREAT LOVE
    • it is the love of God which is the flowing fountain of the mercy of God
    • We cannot see the mercy of God apart from the love of God
    • he is not merciful because it’s “not a big deal"
    • he is not merciful because he feels guilty being “mean” to us
    • MERCY comes from His love and is as never ending as his LOVE!

5even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

  • He loves us BEFORE we have done anything to love Him
    • His love is not earned
  • Christ was dead - we were dead - God made Jesus alive - He also made us alive together with Jesus.
    • The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is active in your spirit, soul, and body RIGHT NOW!
  • by grace you have been saved - HE DID IT - YOU DIDN”T DO IT - you didn’t deserve it - you can’t earn it.  IT’s FREE

6and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly [places] in Christ Jesus,

  • Christ was raised up - we are raised up - Christ was seated in heavenly places - WE ARE SEATED with HIM
  • We have been brought into a mystical union with Christ
    • we have been joined with him.
    • Through Faith we have been JOINED to Christ - we are his bride
    • His righteous life becomes our righteous life
    • His death becomes our death
    • His record our record
    • his Spirit OUR Spirit
    • his inheritance OUR inheritance
    • His suffering our suffering
    • HIs mission our mission
    • His authority our authority
  • He is still the head - we only exorcise these as we continue in unity “abiding” in Him
  •  "Yes, this is here given as the final glory of the infinitely exalted Christ. Angels and archangels are subject to Him. But believing men are joined to Him, with a union such that He and they, by this same messenger of His, are called elsewhere (1 Corinthians 12:12) one 'Christ.' " (Moule)

7so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassingriches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

  • We were seated in Christ Jesus so that he might show the riches of grace and kindness
  • We are eternal demonstrations of the kindness and the grace of God
    • in us
    • to us
    • out of us
    • through us
    • the universe sees the kindness and grace of God because He has poured it out on us.

8For by grace you have been saved through faith;and that not of yourselves, [it is] the gift of God;

  • Everybody knows this verse but how many of you have asked what the “for” is for?
    • He is unpacking what he just said.
      • We are joined to Christ
      • brought from death to life
      • raised and seated in Heavenly places
      • THAT IS A DEMONSTRATION OF GOD’S GRACE BECAUSE
    • by grace - for free, unearned, not because of our goodness or anything inside us
    • we have been saved
    • through faith - and not faith you gave yourself or bought for yourself but faith that was given to you!

9not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

  •  God didn’t do this for you because you earned it
  • If God was just paying you what you earned then it wouldn’t be kindness or grace
  • God did it all for you apart from anything you ever did - because He wanted to be the ONLY ONE who could boast about you.  He wanted to be the ONLY ONE who got credit for what you are becoming.

10For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

  • HIS workmanship - God is the one at work
  • Phili 2:13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
  • Even the good works that we do were prepared beforehand for us to walk in.
  • All of it.  Every scrap is a gift! Every moment of our lives is grace - an undeserved gift given to us by an incomprehensibly generous God - for His glory and our joy
  • Everything we have ever done or will ever do will bring NO GLORY to us and great glory to God!!

Ephesians 1:15-22

15For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which [exists] among you and your love for all the saints,

Pay attention to that phrase - it is significant -

  • "your faith in the Lord Jesus” - duh right he was glad to hear about that - they have become believers!!!  Praise the LORD
  • "and your love for all the saints” - why this?  Because it is evidence that the faith is real!  In both Philemon and Colossians Paul makes this same kind of statement - When’s the last time you heard something like this from church members or church growth experts.  It was not enough for Paul to hear about their faith.  He knew it was REAL when there was love -
    • 1 Tim 1:5 - "the End of our charge is love”
    • John 13:35 - The Gospel creates a community where love is everywhere this is what Jesus said about His followers - Father forgive us for losing this.

16do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention [of you] in my prayers;

Paul’s prayers are not to be missed and two of my favorites are in this epistle.  so we are going to spend some time in this prayer.  It is so powerful.  He prayed earnestly for those he converted.  He felt like a spiritual parent to them.

17that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him.

He prayed that the Father would give them a spirit of

  • wisdom - to actually understand what you already know - to make the journey from head to heart.
  • and revelation - to give you more knowledge deep powerful spiritual knowledge that you do not come to from study alone
  • in the knowledge of Him - this is the only knowledge that really matters - the only knowledge worth anything - Oh let me desire this forever!!!
    • there is infinite knowledge about Him to discover
    • he is endless and endlessly delightful!- endless ocean, bottomless sea!

18[I pray that] the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

He prayed that

  • the eyes of their hearts may be enlightened -
  • to know what is the hope of His calling
    • what is the point of this salvation?
    • Why did Jesus save us?
  • the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints
    • the glory of HIS inheritance in US
  • the surpassing greatness of His power toward us.

19and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.

[These are] in accordance with the working of the strength of His might 20which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly [places], 21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23which is His body, the fullnessof Him who fills all in all.
