What’s the deal with Easter?  Why do we celebrate this day?

on Passover which was only a few days ago the jewish children are taught to ask - “why is this day different than any other?”

It’s a good question!

A lot of holidays are just excuses to indulge in excess we wouldn’t normally allow

but in Easter - we find something truly worth celebration

In Easter we learn How NEW LIFE begins.

2 Cor 5 17Therefore if anyone is in Christ, [he is] a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

That's what this is all about.  Old things passing away. New things have come!

Jesus took the old into the grave and brought out the new!

Let's read the story:

John 20

1Now on the first [day] of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone [already] taken away from the tomb. 2So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him." 3So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb. 4The two were running together; and the other disciple ran aheadfaster than Peter and came to the tomb first; 5and stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings lying [there]; but he did not go in. 6And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying [there], 7and the face-cloth which had beenon His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. 8So the otherdisciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed. 9For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 10So the disciples went away again to their own homes.

11But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and lookedinto the tomb; 12and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, wherethe body of Jesus had been lying. 13And they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She saidto them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him."14When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing [there], and did not know that it was Jesus. 15Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?"Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, "Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me whereyou have laid Him, and I will take Him away." 16Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means, Teacher). 17Jesus said to her, "Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.'" 18Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and [that] He had said these things to her.

Jesus among His Disciples

19So when it was evening on that day, the first [day] of the week, and when the doors were shutwhere the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace [be] with you." 20And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21So Jesus said to them again, "Peace [be] with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you." 22And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.

What JESUS took into the grave with him

  • He took our Sin -
    • Romans 6:23 - the wages of Sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord
    • Everything we've ever done - and we've all done things
    • Romans 3:23 - All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God
  • our self centeredness
    • When Jesus died we died our old lives lived for our own ends our own
    • Gal 2:20 - "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
  • Our shame
    • We have all done things we regret. Been people we never thought we were JESUS took that with him into the grave
    • Isaiah 54:4“Fear not, for you will not be put to shame; And do not feel humiliated, for you will not be disgraced;  But you will forget the shame of your youth, And the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more.  5“For your husband is your Maker, Whose name is the LORD of hosts; And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel, Who is called the God of all the earth.
  • Our sickness and our DEATH
    • Isaiah 53:5 5But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins.  He was beaten so we could be whole.  He was whipped so we could be healed.
    • 1 Cor 1551But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! 52It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed. 53For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies. 54Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die,j this Scripture will be fulfilled Death is swallowed up in victory.k55O death, where is your victory?O death, where is your sting?l56For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. 57But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.

What JESUS brought OUT of the grave

  • Forgiveness -  a second chance -  a brand new life - free of all those things he took with him into the grave
    • Romans 10:9 - 9If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
    • Romans 4:25 - He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification
  • Freedom and power
    • Romans 8:1-3 1So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. 2And because you belong to him, the powera of the life-giving Spirit has freed youb from the power of sin that leads to death. 3The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature.c So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.
  • Acceptance
    • From God
      • Romans 5:1 Therefore, since we have been made right in God's sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.
    • From the body of Christ. The brotherhood of the resurrected
      • 1 Peter 2:10 "Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God's people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God's mercy."
  • Purpose
    • Gal 2:20 - "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

2 Cor 5 17Therefore if anyone is in Christ, [he is] a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
