This statement is connected to the last -

Last week we talked about Blessed are the poor in spirit - Blessed are those who cannot do this on their own.

People say - isn’t religion just a crutch for those who cannot make it on their own??

the answer is YES - and I am so glad that it is!  There is no one who CAN

Now we come to Blessed are those that mourn - for they shall be comforted

This is connected to that - in two ways.

  1. Mourning because of our brokenness and failure - not being ok with staying the same
    • which leads to repentance
    • which leads to dependance on God
    • which leads us back to poverty of spirit - the deep down understanding that we without Christ we can do nothing!
      • John 15:5 5I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
  2. Mourning out of pain and loss
    • We are so convinced that it is important that we are impregnable impervious
      • we refuse to mourn -
      • we put on a smile -
      • we distract ourselves.
      • we ask people not to tell anyone.
    • Pain is a friend - pain is a treasure -
      • as we turn to the Lord and His great promises -
        • Romans 8:28 -
      • as we turn to one another and we are encouraged
  3. BECAUSE we will be comforted -
    • there are those who refuse to be comforted - the whole world is falling apart!
      • They refuse to receive hope and help
      • they refuse good advice
      • It will never get any better...
    • When we weep with the one who can do all things we know that our weeping will come to an end! - BECAUSE of HIM
