Romans 1:16 - the Gospel is the power of God for Salvation of all who believe

Acts 2:42 - 42They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship,

1 Cor 15:1-4

1Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.

3For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

Rom 8:1-4

1Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sinand of death. 3For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God [did]: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and [as an offering] for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

The word Gospel - means good news - we ARE A PEOPLE of the Good news

  1. informed by the good news - we believe it - we think it is the truth
  2. formed by the good news - because we believe it the way we act, think, and feel is changed

The message of the Gospel is this:

Romans 3:23 - For ALL have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God

This passage says two things - lets take the verse backward

  1. The goal - the requirement is God’s glory - God’s own perfection is the standard - anyone who does not meet it is a sinner.
    • you might say you are good - but you aren’t!
    • the word for sin means “to miss the mark"
  2. NO ONE has ever attained it other than Jesus Christ Himself
    • no one is holier than anyone else
    • no one is more deserving of God’s love or attention than anyone else

Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death, but the FREE GIFT of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord

  1. the result of sin - the wages - that which comes from sin - is death
    • God is life - sin is being apart from God - separated from Him - different from him
    • that which is not life is death - there is no in between
    • please understand this isn’t God “killing” the sinner - it’s just the natural consequence of leaving LIFE behind
    • God cannot act unlike himself:
      • God is just, infinitely holy
      • Sin deserves destruction, punishment, elimination - because it brings death and destruction
      • God CANNOT just forget sin - he can’t just sweep it under the rug
  2. the free gift of God is eternal life
    • God desires to give life
    • God has made a way THROUGH CHRIST to re-obtain life
    • getting back to life means reconnecting with God - reconnecting to HE THAT IS LIFE
  3. We are NOT just talking about “the after-life” here.  We are talking about RIGHT NOW
    • this is not “fire insurance” it is life or non-life - FOREVER starting NOW.
    • “eternal life” - not just about length but about quality.
    • the greek here is PRESENT TENSE
    • "does not focus on the future per se, but rather on the quality of the age (165 /aiṓn) it relates to. Thus believers live in "eternal (166 /aiṓnios) life" right now, experiencing this quality of God's life now as a present possession.”

Romans 5:8 - But God demonstrates his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

  1. The reason God made a way for us is because he loves us - God is infinitely loving
    • God loves us so much that he chose to pay the debt himself - to accept the wages of our sin himself
    • In order to do that HE had to die - there was a GREAT COST - a great cost that HE PAID because of his love
  2. He did this while we were yet sinners
    • we were still flipping him off!
    • we were still in rebellion
    • we had made no moves toward Him, we had not asked for forgiveness, we did not deserve another chance

Ephesians 2:8-9 - 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, [it is] the gift of God; 9not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

  1. By GRACE we have been saved:
    • God’s kindness and generosity
    • FOR FREE - remember it is the FREE GIFT of God - you cannot PAY for a gift
    • you cannot earn it
    • NOT as a result of works - it was not your righteousness that saved you or that gave you peace with God.
  2. Through Faith
    • by being persuaded - that’s what the word means in Greek - being persuaded - I believe this -
      • I believe the good news
    • Faith does not allow for mental ascent only - it means belief that is evidenced through action
      • James 2:18 - Faith without works is dead
      • putting your money where your mouth is.
      • if you don’t then you don’t believe - no evidence no faith
    • and that not of yourself
      • even the faith is a gift
      • even the ability to believe is given to you by God
  3. So that no one may boast
    • nobody gets to say they earned this - only God gets the credit for what is happening in you
    • Nobody can hold their salvation over somebody else cause they didn’t earn it
    • a believer cannot look down on an unbeliever because they didn’t earn a thing.
  4. We have now an infinitely Holy God who is ALSO infinitely LOVING
    • you are so humbled because you are a sinner
    • you are so bold because you are absolutely loved
    • "when the substitutionary death of Jesus is intellectually coherent and existentially melting to your heart - THAT is where changes happen” Tim Keller
  5. The Gospel humbles us down into the dust because he is so Holy he HAD to die to accept us AND SIMULTANEOUSLY affirms and values us into the sky because he was so loving he CHOSE to die so he COULD accept us!

Romans 10:9-10 - 9that if you confess with your mouth Jesus [as] Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.

  1. Confess with your mouth - Jesus is Lord
    • Jesus is the ruler of my life
    • Jesus is God
  2. Believe in your heart - God raised him from the Dead
    • Jesus is ALIVE now and saving me
    • Jesus death and resurrection are applied to me
    • I have now died and resurrection HAS BEGUN IN ME
  3. You will be saved - righteousness and eternal life
    • The Gospel is NOT the 101 of Christianity the Gospel is HOW WE DO LIFE
    • everything must now be looked at and thought about via the lens of the Gospel
    • we reinterpret the world based on this news.
    • who we are in the world changes RADICALLY - belief from he heart results in righteousness
      • how I think
      • how I feel
      • how I speak
      • how I act
